A lonely Detroiter walks down the street. Abandoned. Abandoned by the industry that provided his Grandfather with a passport to the middle class. Left stateless by Government whose very action of abandonment was charged by Political hacks in states whose very wealth was built on the backs and imaginations of generations of Detroiters. Can you imagine a modern Atlanta or Dallas without the automobile? Would the great westward migration have happened if recent generations were tied to wagon trains? They would have stopped at the Divide and Los Angeles would still be a backwater port and desert if not for the car.

What is most troubling about the current dialogue is how working men and women have been painted as the bad guys- too often portrayed as greedy slackers intent on using union goons and stooges to grease skids for their life of leisure. How did this happen? Merrill Lynch executives push through billions of dollars in bonuses before taking their snouts to lap up at the TARP through. The AVERAGE pay at Goldman Saks is north of $600,000 and there they are in line to get a bailout check. Being a shameless bunch, you can catch their hacks on the business news channels prattling on about how Detroit needs to get its act together and cut wages of those grossly overpaid shop rats.

Never mind that the current crisis is directly a result of the nincompoopery in the executive suites and boardrooms of the banks. These alchemists in their Harvard wizard hats sold the idea of turning sub- prime loans into gold. All the while they pocketed billions in compensation and when their loans were found out to be fools gold, they had the balls to say, “Oops! Can we a get check from the tax payers to cover our loses?” And here they are wagging their boney fingers at our neighbors, accusing them of being out of step, overpaid and, well, stupid.
